Winging cake

My husband just earned his Naval Aviator wings, and so in celebration I made a cake for him!  It's a chocolate cake with peanut butter mousse and peanut butter cups chopped up for the filling.  I iced with buttercream and then sculpted the wings from fondant.  The side is decorated with hand placed gold dragees (sugar pearls) It was a lot of fun to make and my husband appriciated it.

  1. Love your cake! Any chance you're in CC and willing to make another? :)

  3. Hello! Would you be willing to share how you made the wings out of fondant? Any tips? I want to make a similar cake for my husband's winging! I was thinking of making the cake in the shape of the wings. Thanks so much!

  4. Sure, and congratulations to your husband! I printed out a photo of the wings in the size I wanted and used it as a template to get the basic shape for the wings. Then, I just built on and sculpted from there in layers. I started with the anchor and the shield. For the shield, I just rolled out a snake of fondant and outlined the shield. Then I moved onto the wings and shaped the feathers just using a toothpick. It was much easier than I thought it would be! I started with a yellow fondant, and then painted super gold luster dust on to that. The photo doesn't show it very well, but it looked much more metallic, I was pleased with the color!
